How to Declutter Your Mind in 5 Steps: A Fast Track to Mental Clarity

Updated: Dec 4, 2023

In our fast-paced world, it’s easy for our minds to become cluttered with endless to-dos, worries, and digital noise. Just like decluttering your home can bring a sense of calm, decluttering your mind can lead to mental clarity and improved focus. Here are five actionable steps that help me clear mental clutter and find that much-needed peace of mind; hopefully they will help you, too!

1. Digital Detox:

  • Start with a Digital Break: Begin by leaving devices in another room. In general, setting aside specific times during the day when you disconnect from digital (especially social) media is a huge game-changer in maintaining mental clarity. Whether it’s during meals, right after waking up, or an hour before bed, these digital-free zones can significantly reduce mental clutter.

  • Unsubscribe and Unfollow: If you're not ready to spend some time away from your devices, start by cleaning up your digital spaces. Delete useless or toxic apps, turn off social media notifications, and/or unfollow social media accounts that don't add value to your life. This step alone can make your digital world feel much less overwhelming.

2. Brain Dump:

  • Write Down Your Thoughts: Take some time to write down your thoughts in a journal. This practice is not about keeping a diary; it’s about transferring your mental clutter onto paper. Think brainstorm not brain-gentle-trickle; just try to dump everything that is stressing you out, bothering you, and/or distracting you onto the digital or physical page. Personally, I absolutely hate writing this stuff down, but I can't deny that it really does help.

  • Let Go: Use your journaling time to evaluate what’s important to you and what can be let go. Most of the time we stress about stuff that really REALLY isn't even a *blip* in the grand scheme of what's actually important to us.

3. Prioritization:

  • Identify Your Non-Negotiables: What are the things in your life that are absolutely necessary, bring you peace, or bring you the most joy? Identifying these will help you prioritize tasks and commitments.

  • Say No: Of course, we can never have more than 24h in the day, so if we need more time we need to do less. Evaluate your upcoming commitments and tasks, and see if there are any that make you especially anxious or stressed. If you find one, see if it's possible to cancel it, delegate it to someone else, or find an alternative for it, especially if it doesn't align with your priorities. Of course, you can say no to any incoming request or opportunity that doesn't align with your non-negotiables.

4. Fresh Air and Hopefully, Sunshine:

  • Go Outside: Another one of those things that, if I'm honest, I really dread doing when I'm overwhelmed - but once I go, I feel so much better. Going for a walk is great, especially if the sun is out. Alternatively, sitting outside in the grass can also help, and can be combined with meditation and deep breathing.

  • Presence: If going outside is not an option, anything that diverts the focus from the past and future back to the present can help. It can be playing an instrument, painting something, sewing - whatever brings focus to the here and now.

5. Organize Your Physical Space:

  • Declutter Your Environment: A cluttered environment often leads to a cluttered mind. Taking some time to organize and clear out physical clutter in your living and working spaces can make a world of a difference. I also love tossing and donating items when I'm not feeling well, as any item that leaves my space is one I'll never have to clean up again! That's pretty cool.

  • Create a Peaceful Space: Designate a peaceful area in your home where you can relax, be it a cozy reading nook or a small meditation corner. Having a physical space that promotes calmness can significantly improve your mental state.

Conclusion:

Decluttering your mind gets easier, the more often we do it. By incorporating these five steps into your weekly routine, you can gradually reduce mental clutter and embrace a more peaceful and joyful day-to-day life. 💛
